WE ARE IN MUMBAI
Based Upon’s presence in Mumbai intensifies this November as The End As We Know It debuts at the inaugural Art Mumbai, and Breath (From Where Did This Paradise Spring) radiates tranquillity as the new Taj The Trees hotel, Vikrholi, opens its doors.

Tramazite, Patina, Coloured Pigment
1500mm diameter
The End As We Know It continues Based Upon’s exploration of the largest and smallest scales of both the observable and imagined universe. Only by traversing to the edges of the known do we believe that we can find our centre. At cosmic scale, creation and destruction are often indistinguishable. When we contemplate seismic transformation at galactic scale it brings perspective to such forces in our own lives.
Our London-based studio’s proprietary Tramazite appears to be a rare mineral, as though created at the birth of a star. This handmade material evokes a distant perimeter, perhaps, from where it has come.

Creating fine musical instruments is an artform in itself. Digi-Baby is designed to convey those who encounter it – both aesthetically and musically – to another realm. As an evolution of Based Upon’s signature Twist sculpture, this piano derives its dramatic form from a single pattern repeated throughout our universe. The natural spiral can be found at both minute and colossal scales, from the florets of a sunflower to the formations of galaxies.
Digi-Baby’s tri-oval top twists gracefully away from its base to unveil a self-playing electronic piano. The top is crafted using Based Upon’s unique Tramazite material, inspired by studies of the natural world, seemingly encapsulating profound movements of the cosmos or the depths of an ocean.
HARNESSING MUMBAI'S MANGROVES
Commissioned to depict the relationship between the new Taj The Trees hotel and the surrounding Vikhroli Mangroves in Mumbai, Ian Abell and Alex Welch embarked on an emotive journey into the mangrove reserve, to witness and feel Mumbai’s lifeline at work. The beauty and significance of the unique landscape, and all that exists within it, is expressed across one of the largest in our signature Breath series.
