Corinthia Hotel London
Based Upon were priveleged to create the feature artwork for the reception of Corinthia, London's newest Grand Hotel. The centrepiece of the reception area is a 3 m x 3 m artwork in bronze which is bisceted by a hand-carved river inlaid with images depicting the London skyline. The river motif continues its journey through the marble of the reception desk. The artwork references Corinthia's location close to the river and to the site of the original Charing Cross the point from which all other distances were measured and deemed to be the centre of London. Metals radiate from platinum to dark bronze from the central point. Te london panorama was created by photographing the banks of the Thames shooting approximately every 200 metres along a 20 mile length. Leaves collected from Northumberland Avenue are laid up in fine casts to create the textural marks in the work and the leaves extend into canopys on the elevator doors.
