Inspired by the Cartesian grid pattern of the Manhattan geography and architecture, Based Upon made this set of binoculars for the Mondrian hotel in Tribeca in response to the ‘Handmade’ brief set by Wallpaper Magazine. Overlaying map patterns with personal perspectives of New York from Street level, the piece also incorporates references to the rich history of Manhattan. Wallpaper Magazine is presently showcasing the work in their August edition as well as on their iPad App, along with an interview with Based Upon founder Ian Abell outlining the design process.
