Notions of Pricelessness

8/02/2009

Based Upon were asked to donate a piece of art or furniture to the House of St.Barnabas in Soho. This would then be auctioned to raise money for the charity  which provides help and support for a number of London’s homeless.

Rather than simply hand over a piece of work Based Upon decided to create a unique piece of work that celebrated the legacy of the House of St.Barnabas, with the help of the volunteers and staff of the house.

When working on its art and furniture commissions Based Upon asks many of its patrons to contribute something precious which will become the inspiration or root of the commissioned piece. Most of Based Upon’s patrons come from the opposite end of the economic scale to those affected by homelessness, but the objects that they decide upon as precious are remarkably similar. In effect they are priceless, their value on the market bears no relation to the significance they bear. These priceless items are often stored away in a box, under a bed, or in the backs of our minds. Based Upon seeks to integrate these pieces, or moments in time, within its art and design, to remind us of what we treasure and who we are.

The completed piece will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to the charity.
